This is Kansas ... the heartland. Wheat Capital of the U.S. Breadbasket of the World. So yeah, we’re kind of a big deal. Manhattan hosts the biennial National Festival of Breads again June 8, 2019 at spacious Manhattan Conference Center. Additional events take place right outside in Blue Earth Plaza, with morning 5K race part of the festivities.
NFOB traces its roots to the 1990 Kansas Festival, and categories have evolved over time. In 2009, the initial NFOB was staged in Wichita. Ronna Farley from Maryland was selected the 2017 grand prize winner as NFOB gathered in Manhattan for the fourth time. Farley's bread creation was Seeded Corn and Onion Bubble Loaf, chosen among eight competitors.
