MAC Birdhouse: Kenney White - Mar. 26
We are delighted welcome back to Birdhouse of one of our favorite artists: Kenny White. Kenny combines urban storytelling with an acrobatic piano playing, reminding us, as a Birdhouse regular put it, “that the piano is a percussion instrument.” At the age of six, Kenny started playing songs that he heard on the radio, and his professional career has had him playing with such famous artists as Linda Ronstadt, Dwight Yoakam, Gladys Knight, Aaron Neville, Ricky Skaggs, Al Jarreau, and Kim Carnes. Lively, smart, and lyrical, Kenny’s performance is one you won’t want to miss.

C.L. Hoover Opera House: Topeka Symphony - No Strings Attached - Mar. 28
The Topeka Symphony Orchestra has been providing Northeast Kansas with superb live performances since 1946. A nationally-recognized orchestra, the TSO offers a seven-concert series that includes classical, “discovery,” and educational concerts. “No Strings Attached” is a program featuring the woodwind, brass and percussion sections. Selections include Handel’s “Music for the Royal Fireworks,” Dvorak’s Serenade for Winds, and the Suite from Kurt Weill’s “Threepenny Opera” from which the song “Mack the Knife” is derived.

Rich Pigments; A Group Pastel Show

Pastels, those “sticks of pure pigment with a neutral binder”, creating dazzling color, have been used by artists since the 17th century, and have gained prominence once again as an enduring medium for painting.

This exhibit will feature a dozen pastel painters exhibiting paintings from figurative to landscapes to abstract. The featured pastel artists are Kim Casebeer, Louis Copt, Steven Graber, John Hulsey, Becky Johnson, Mary Kay, Dean Kube, Annie Helmericks Louder, Judy Love, Nora Othic, Gary Ozias, and Jean Terry.

In addition there will be large realist floral paintings by Ann Trusty; watercolor and acrylic paintings by Jane Booth; collages by Joelle Ford; and Flint Hills landscapes by Judith Mackey.

There will be ceramics by Wynne Wilbur, and assemblage paintings by Tricia Courtney.
